How do I find out who my energy supplier is?
Save more nowHow do I find out who my energy supplier is?
Save more nowIf you don’t know who supplies the gas or electricity to your home or commercial property, you may not know where to turn for help.
This guide will give you all the information you need to ascertain who your current energy suppliers are and help you decide if the domestic or commercial energy deals they’re providing are right for you.
There are certain situations where you might not have information on who is supplying your energy. For example, if you’ve just moved house or if your business has opened an office in a new commercial premises, you might not know who is supplying your gas and electricity until you receive a bill.
The problem with waiting until you get a bill is, if you want to avoid paying for energy that was consumed before you moved into the property, you should give your energy company a meter reading on the day you arrive.
Another problem is that you’re likely to be on a ‘deemed contract’ with the previous resident’s energy provider until you arrange the best deal for you. A deemed contract is one that’s in place when someone moves into a new property or when a contract expires but gas and electricity continues to be used.
The rates charged on deemed contracts are on average 80 per cent higher than those charged on negotiated deals. Finding out who your supplier is and what rates you are on will allow you to compare their tariffs with the rest of the market and will help you avoid overpaying for your utilities.
Of course, in many cases, the landlord, letting agent or previous owner or tenant may be able to tell you who supplies your energy.
If the previous resident has contacted their provider to inform them of the move, the energy company will usually send a letter addressed to ‘the Occupier’. This should provide details of your current energy plan and who your provider is.
However, if you cannot get this information from anyone involved in the move and the previous resident didn’t tell the energy company about the move, you’ll need to take other steps.
Whether you’ve just moved into your new home or you’re setting up shop in a new business property, you can find out who supplies your gas by phoning the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524. Calls to this number will cost 7p per minute plus your phone provider’s access charge.
Alternatively, you can also use the Meter Point Adminstration’s quick and easy internet search facility, Find My Supplier. This service will also tell you your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN), which is used to inform your energy supplier of the location of your meter.
Once you know your supplier, you can get in touch with them to discuss your tariffs. Then you can start shopping around to see if you can get a better price.
If you don’t have details of your electricity provider, you can use the Energy Networks Association postcode search tool.
You can also get in touch with your regional distribution network operator (DNO). This organisation owns and is responsible for maintaining the power lines and infrastructure that connects homes, businesses and other organisations in your area to the electricity transmission network.
When you call them, ask for the Meter Point Administration Service (MPAS). Using your address and postcode, they’ll be able to find out who your existing electricity supplier is. They can also provide you with the Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN) for your property. This may be required if you decide to switch suppliers.

If you’re on a deemed contract, you’re likely to be paying significantly higher rates for your energy supply than you would be if you were on a fixed-term contract or a competitive variable rate. For information on the advantages and disadvantages of both fixed-price and variable plans, read this blog.
You should make it a priority to check your current rates against other deals and providers. Neglecting to do this could mean that you end up paying more than necessary for your gas and electricity.
Once you have the details of your energy provider and the rates you’re paying for gas and electricity, you can start shopping around for a more competitive deal. You can find the best offers on business energy quickly and easily using our comparison service.

Rob says that thanks to the competitive rates secured by Utility Bidder in his studio, it would actually be cheaper to live there than at home! “We pay about £30 a month for gas during the winter and around £25 a month for electricity – and that’s despite having a lot of energy guzzling equipment such as studio lights and fan heaters. Our energy bills at home are far more expensive!”
